Valve has released the CAD files for the Steam Deck’s external shell to help budding modders and accessory makers start tinkering with the console.
The files have been made available on GitLab under a Creative Commons license and include an STP model, STL model, and drawings (DWG) for reference.
In a detailed post on GitLab, the company noted that Steam Deck owners will have permission to take the console apart and get creative, but warned against being too gung-ho.
“You have every right to open up your Steam Deck and do what you want with it. That said, we highly recommend you leave it to professionals,” wrote Valve. “Any damage you do will not be covered by your warranty — but more importantly, you might break your Steam Deck, or even get hurt! Be careful, and have fun.”
The Steam Deck is due to launch on February 25, 2022, after initially being delayed. Last year, Valve dissected the console to give prospective owners a peek inside, and also published a comprehensive explainer detailing how to create Steam Deck projects without a dev kit.
